FLORIDA CITY, Fla. (AP) - Authorities are expanding their search for an inmate who escaped from a state prison in Miami-Dade County.

Florida Department of Corrections officials said Ronald B. McCoy was unaccounted for after a routine count of inmates Friday afternoon at the Dade Correctional Institution in Florida City.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, McCoy was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of robbery with a deadly weapon in Alachua County. Authorities say McCoy also had been convicted of crimes in Putnam County.

According to a statement from FDLE spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger, McCoy may have family in the Tampa area. He has a small scar on his neck and a tattoo on his left arm that says “Bicep Pysco.”

Anyone with information about McCoy is urged to call 911.
