DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Average gas prices in Michigan and across the country have dropped below $3 a gallon for the first time in nearly four years.

Dearborn-based AAA Michigan says the average statewide gas price fell 13 cents from last week to about $2.97 per gallon Sunday. The average price in the Detroit area was about $2.96. The last time the national, state and Detroit-area averages were all below $3 was in December 2010.

The organization says prices typically decline in the fall, when the industry begins offering a cheaper winter blend and demand decreases.

Eight of the 10 cities AAA Michigan surveyed had prices below $3, with Marquette and Traverse City remaining above that mark. The cheapest price for unleaded fuel was $2.87 a gallon in the Flint area. The highest average is about $3.11 in Marquette.
