SOUTH TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Police in the city of South Tucson say an officer fatally shot a man who fired at the officer’s patrol vehicle with a high-powered rifle.

South Tucson police did not immediately release the name of the dead man or identify the officer involved in the Friday morning shooting.

According to police, the shooting occurred while wan officer was checking an area where there was a report of shots fired.

A police statement says a man walking on a sidewalk turned, faced and fired at the officer’s approaching vehicle. The statement says the officer then got out of the vehicle and fired back, killing the man.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will investigate the shooting.
