ONEONTA, Ala. (AP) - A 10-year-old Alabama boy found hanged from a rope in his bedroom likely died in a tragic accident, police said.

The child’s mother told police in Oneonta, 35 miles northeast of Birmingham, the family was preparing to go to a birthday party Friday evening when she found her son hanging from a rope tied to the top of his bunk bed.

“There’s absolutely nothing to indicate he did this on purpose,” Oneonta Police Chief James Chapman said. “He had been in good spirits, he was making good grades.”

The child was a Boy Scout and had been using the rope to practice tying knots as worked toward earning a merit badge, Chapman said.

Police said the boy’s mother freed him from the rope and ran outside screaming for help. Neighbors called 911 and tried to revive him until paramedics arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where was pronounced dead. Al.com reported (http://bit.ly/1qc6kPt) authorities believe he died instantly.

The child’s name was not immediately released by police in order to give the family time to notify relatives of his death.

Police said the boy lived with his mother and three younger sisters. They had only been home for 15 minutes or less before the boy was found dead at about 5 p.m. Friday
