BOSTON (AP) - Economists are expressing cautious optimism that the Massachusetts economy will continue to show moderate growth through the rest of the year and first quarter of 2015.

But a recent report from the editorial board of MassBenchmarks cited some serious challenges. The board noted that many parts of the state have yet to benefit from growth in the technology sector that has been largely focused on greater Boston.

The report said urban communities - often referred to as Gateway Cities - continue to struggle with difficult economic conditions including high unemployment and stagnant incomes.

The economists also pointed out that Massachusetts was still lagging behind the U.S. as a whole in international exports.

MassBenchmarks is a journal published by the Donahue Institute at the University of Massachusetts.
