SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) - An avid cyclist who raced and competed nationally has died after being hit by a driver who police say was drunk.

Authorities say Mitchell L. Bennett was riding his bike at night in South Salt Lake on Sept. 25 when he was hit behind by a Saturn.

He was taken to the hospital with severe head, neck and back trauma, and succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Police arrested 36-year-old Syracuse resident Peter Vance Wilcox, who they say had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit.

Bennett’s family members issued a statement saying he was a BMX racer since childhood and won many bicycle awards in his lifetime.
