CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - An independent investigator with access to more witnesses and records will reveal what he found after digging into academic fraud at North Carolina’s flagship public university.

Former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein on Wednesday describes his findings since he began looking into academic fraud at the University of North Carolina’s formerly named Department of African and Afro-American Studies in February.

The department was popular with university athletes and some of the problem classes had significant athlete enrollments. A 2012 probe by former Gov. Jim Martin placed no blame on the school’s athletic department.

Wainstein is scheduled to present his findings to the school’s board of trustees as well as the board that oversees the state’s public university system.
