DENVER (AP) - The Federal Communications Commission has approved Level 3 Communications’ plan to buy TW Telecom in a deal worth about $5.7 billion.

The Denver Post reports (http://dpo.st/1wvKVVE ) the deal now awaits shareholder approval, which is expected at Level 3’s shareholder meeting Tuesday.

Level 3, which is based in Broomfield, owns network and data centers around the world. Littleton-based TW Telecom provides data and Internet and other services to businesses in the U.S.

Jeff Storey, Level 3’s chief executive, says the two companies have complementary operations because Level 3 provides the Internet backbone for data over long distances while TW Telecom’s network targets office buildings in metro areas Level 3 doesn’t reach.
