NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - The city of Newport has agreed to help lobby U.S. Customs and Border Protection to set up a port of entry on the Vermont end of Lake Memphremagog to increase cross-border tourism on the border-spanning lake.

The Magog, Quebec, based tour business Escapades Memphremagog wants to bring boatloads of tourists to Newport then bus them back to Magog. A different group of tourists would then ride the boat back to Magog.

Phil White of the Vermont-based Kingdom Games also organizes international winter and summer activities on the lake.

The Caledonian Record (http://bit.ly/1shkeja ) reports that customs officials say the Newport dock is not a commercial port so the agency isn’t required to provide customs services there.

Customs and Border Protection didn’t return a call seeking comment.
