WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. United clinched a playoff spot with a 0-0 home draw against Sporting Kansas City on a rainy Friday night.

The Washington club advanced to the playoffs a year after finishing with a MLS-worst record of just 16 points from 34 games.

United was held scoreless for the third time in five matches. Fabian Espindola had a breakaway shot roll just wide in the 58th minute and Luis Silva’s free kick from just outside the 18-yard box sailed wide in the 71st.

Second-place Kansas City sits six points back in the Eastern Conference.
