DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A design firm remodeling the old Younkers building in downtown Des Moines says redevelopment plans sidelined by a fire could be back on track as early as this year.

David Vos, development director for Alexander Co. in Madison, Wisconsin, tells The Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/1rEfZUr ) that construction of 60 one- and two-bedroom apartment units could begin this year and be ready for residents by the end of 2015. There will be commercial space on the first floor.

The structure, which will be known as the Wilkins Building, was being renovated when it was heavily damaged by a fire in March.

The building’s east portion was completely destroyed by the fire. The west portion was salvageable, and a famous tea room will be restored and possibly expanded.
