TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A federal lawsuit has been filed against a former state trooper and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety in connection with the fatal shooting of a man outside a Tulsa motel last year.

The Tulsa World reports (http://bit.ly/1pxoZFa ) the suit was filed Thursday on behalf of victim Michael Troy Swatosh.

It alleges former trooper Sheldon Robinson used excessive force and that DPS employs a “code of silence” allowing troopers to deprive citizens of their right to due process.

Robinson was fired for policy violations in August. At the time of the shooting, Robinson had claimed that he drove past a motel, saw Swatosh and another man point handguns at him, then got out of his car and fired at Swatosh, hitting him six times.
