BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The state director in North Dakota for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development agency has been tabbed as acting administrator of the federal agency’s Rural Utilities Service.

Jasper Schneider had served for five years in his role as state director before his appointment this week.

The Rural Utilities Service is tasked with supporting and expanding public utilities, including electricity, telephone, high-speed Internet, and water systems.

Schneider is lawyer and a former Democratic state representative from Fargo. He resigned from the North Dakota House in 2009 to take the job as North Dakota’s director for the federal Agriculture Department’s Rural Development agency.

Schneider ran unsuccessfully in 2008 for state insurance commissioner.
