PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The unemployment rate for New England edged up in August to 5.9 percent but remains below the U.S. average.

The regional information office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the figure for the six-state region on Friday. The regional rate for July was 5.8 percent. A year ago, it was 7.2 percent.

Rhode Island’s rate of 7.7 percent was the highest in the region and the third highest in the country. Connecticut’s rate was 6.6 percent, Massachusetts’ was 5.8 percent, Maine’s was 5.6 percent, New Hampshire’s was 4.4 percent and Vermont’s was 4.1 percent.

The national unemployment rate in August was 6.1 percent.
