FOREST, Miss. (AP) - A special election will be held Jan. 6 for a new board for the Scott County School District.

Gov. Phil Bryant announced the election Thursday. The qualifying deadline for candidates is Nov. 7.

In September, the state Board of Education started the process of returning the 4,200-student school system to local control. It expects that to occur in June 2015.

Chief School Performance Officer Pat Ross says by then, the new school board will be in place, board members can be trained and they can hire a new superintendent

Former school board members cannot run again.

The state took over the district in February, saying former Superintendent Bingham Moncrief ruled through intimidation and flouted state rules. The former school board sought the intervention.
