MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont congressional delegation says the state airport in Newport is getting $8.8 million federal grants to help fund its expansion.

The grant from the Federal Aviation Administration will extend the runway an additional 1,000 feet to serve more and larger planes that will be able to bring people to the area for business, tourist and recreational opportunities.

The funds will also be used to complete the construction of the area where aircraft are parked, unloaded or loaded, refueled and boarded.

Sens. Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch said Thursday that the airport improvements the grants will pay for are essential to job growth in the area.
