PURDUE (1-1) vs. No. 11 NOTRE DAME (2-0) at Indianapolis, 7:40 p.m. (NBC)

Line: Notre Dame by 28½.

Series Record: Notre Dame leads 57-26-2.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

The Shillelagh Trophy — and a whole lot more. Following back-to-back 31-point victories, the Fighting Irish are on the verge of cracking the top 10 and probably would make it with another rout. That kind of move would likely ignite talk of Notre Dame being back in the national championship mix. Purdue is looking for its first signature win under second-year coach Darrell Hazell and a chance to regain some confidence.

KEY MATCHUP

Notre Dame QB Everett Golson against Purdue’s secondary. Notre Dame’s quarterback is playing even better than he did when he helped the Irish reach the national championship game. Purdue has allowed 72 points to two Mid-American Conference teams, at home, and struggled to tackle last week. If the Boilermakers’ secondary has trouble again, things could get ugly — and fast.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Purdue: QBs Danny Etling and Austin Appleby. Both played last weekend and both were off. This week, both have worked with the starters though Hazell has not yet announced a starter.

Notre Dame: WR Amir Carlisle. A year ago, Carlisle ran 11 times for 16 yards against the Boilermakers. Since moving to receiver this year, Carlisle has become a play-maker. Through two games, he has nine catches, 115 yards and two TDs. This week, Carlisle’s father, Duane, Purdue’s director of sports performance, will get a firsthand look at how much his son has improved.

FACTS & FIGURES

The series, which began in 1896, goes on a five-year hiatus after Saturday. … A win would give Notre Dame its second 3-0 start in three years, the first time that’s happened since 1987-90 when Notre Dame opened 4-0 four straight times. … The Irish haven’t played in Indianapolis since beating Purdue 23-21 at the Hoosier Dome on Sept. 8, 1984. … Only Southern California (35) and Michigan State (28) have beaten Notre Dame more often than Purdue (26).
