SOUTH BERWICK, Maine (AP) - Police in Maine are looking into the role that alcohol played in a golf cart crash that claimed the life of a Massachusetts man.

Police say 27-year-old Eric Sullivan of Stoughton, Massachusetts, died Wednesday when the cart he was in crashed at The Links at Outlook golf course in South Berwick.

Sullivan and the cart’s operator were thrown from the vehicle, which then rolled on top of the victim. The driver, whose name has not been released, suffered minor injuries.

Police Chief Dana Lajoie says there were beer cans in the cart and blood samples were taken from Sullivan and the driver. He says investigators are also looking into the possibility of a mechanical malfunction with the cart.

Golf course management called the death a “terrible and unfortunate tragedy.”
