FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - The Pee Dee chapter of the American Red Cross is conducting a training boot camp for those interested in becoming Red Cross volunteers in the region.

The free classes are being held Sept. 12, 13, and 14 at the Darlington County Fire District in Hartsville.

The Sept. 12 class is a new volunteer orientation and overview. The next class focuses on shelter issues while the Sept. 14 class deals with assessing disaster issues. The classes may also serve as a refresher for current volunteers.

To register, please call 843-662-8121 or email Stefanie.pratt@redcross.org.

Because of its volunteer network, the Red Cross has been able to help more than 1,600 people affected by disasters in the state and region since the first of the year.
