WAYNESVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois librarian is retiring after 50 years of service.

Margie Rich was honored last Sunday for spending five decades at the Waynesville Township Library. She’s stepping down from the post on Wednesday.

Rich tells The (Bloomington) Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/1qrcBWo ) the library was a very different place when she started years ago. She said she had to sit by the oil burner in the winter with boots, hats, coats and gloves. She also recalls an instance where she herded a group of children into the library’s basement during a severe storm that whipped through the area.

Library Board President Sherri Welch said Rich’s retirement is a loss for more than just the library.

Welch said Rich “knows more about this town than anybody.”
