ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A northwestern Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to assaulting his dentist with a tire iron because the doctor prescribed antibiotics instead of pulling a tooth.

The Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/1xfmoIG) reports 30-year-old Philip Kienholz pleaded Wednesday to charges of aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime.

The plea means Kienholz acknowledges the incident but was unable to control his actions or appreciate their wrongfulness due to his schizo-effective disorder.

Erie police say Kienholz cornered the dentist while he was treating a juvenile patient, then hit the doctor in the wrist with the tire iron before running away.

The Erie man’s public defender did not immediately return a phone call Thursday.

It was not immediately clear when Kienholz will be sentenced or what kind of term he faces.
