WHAT’S AT STAKE

Texas Tech wants to clean up lack of discipline Red Raiders displayed against Central Arkansas. Tech finished last season near the bottom nationally in penalties with 104 and is back in same spot to start 2014 after getting 15 penalties for 114 yards in opener. Miners get first of two early chances for signature win. They play at No. 20 Kansas State on Sept. 27.

KEY MATCHUP

UTEP run game vs. Texas Tech’s defense. UTEP sophomore RB Aaron Jones had three TDS and career-high 237 yards (10.8 per rush on 22 carries) in 31-24 win at New Mexico. Red Raiders’ young defense gave up 184 yards rushing against Central Arkansas, though average per carry was 3.3 yards.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Texas Tech: WR Bradley Marquez had career highs in receptions (11) and receiving yards (184) last week. He looks to be QB Davis Webb’s go-to receiver in pass-first attack. He caught two TDs in fourth quarter against Central Arkansas, including a career-long 70-yarder.

UTEP: QB Jameill Showers, transfer from Texas A&M;, faces old offensive coordinator in Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury. They were together with Aggies when Showers backed up Johnny Manziel. Showers missed last five games of first season with UTEP because of right shoulder injury. Threw for 116 yards and TD in opener.
