PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Minor renovations at the South Dakota state capitol are underway now that this year’s legislative session is over.

KGFX-AM (http://bit.ly/1EdVsNm ) reports that the crews are replacing the carpet in the House and Senate chambers, galleries and leadership.

The carpet in the House and Senate hasn’t been replaced since it was put in in the late 1980s. That carpeting was custom designed to match carpet that covered the floors in the Capitol in 1910.

Now, 25 years later it’s pulling apart at some seams and tearing in thinned spots.

The new carpet will match the existing flooring.

Mike Mueller of the South Dakota Bureau of Administration says it was an opportune time to replace the flooring since other minor renovations are in progress
