PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a 3-year-old girl was seriously injured after she was mauled by a dog at a home in west Philadelphia.

Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detectives division said the girl was sitting on an 84-year-old female relative’s lap when the mastiff lunged at her.

Police said the girl was mauled in the head area, and the woman was also bitten while trying to protect the child.

The girl was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.

The dog is in the custody of the city’s animal control department. Walker said the animal had been with the family for about five years and hadn’t displayed any behavioral problems before.
