SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police arrested 18 gang members in Utah as part of a nationwide operation led by immigration officials.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations said in a statement that nearly 1,000 gang members and associates from 239 different gangs were arrested across the county as part of the organization’s six-week Project Wildfire.

ICE said they believe the Utah arrestees are tied to international criminal networks, including the Sureños, Crips, Soldiers of Aryan Culture, Tiny Oriental Posse and Varrio Loco Town.

The arrests were in Salt Lake City, Sandy, Murray, Layton, West Jordan, West Valley City, Midvale, Kearns and St. George. ICE said most of those arrested are U.S. citizens.

Local police departments and the Utah Department of Corrections helped ICE with the operation, which ended March 31.
