DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Senate has confirmed four members to the board that oversee the state’s three public universities.

The Senate voted Wednesday to confirm the appointments of Mary Andringa, Sherry Bates, Patricia Cownie and Rachael Johnson to the Iowa Board of Regents.

Andringa, Cownie and Johnson were appointed in early March. Bates was asked to join the board last year to replace a regent who resigned before her term was over.

The Senate chamber has the power to confirm or deny such leadership positions, which are appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad. Other appointments confirmed Wednesday included Jerry Bartruff, director of the Iowa Department of Corrections, and Roxann Ryan, commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
