FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A youth minister at a central New Jersey church has been charged with sexually assaulting two teenage girls in separate incidents.

Middlesex County prosecutors announced Wednesday that 48-year-old Shawn Butler, of Hillsborough, was arrested Friday at a relative’s home in Millsboro, Delaware. He was freed after posting $50,000 bail and is scheduled to surrender to authorities in New Jersey on May 1.

Butler faces a sexual assault count and two counts each of criminal sexual contact and child endangerment. His bail in New Jersey has been set at $300,000.

Prosecutors say Butler sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl in North Brunswick on various occasions between July 2012 and August 2013. He’s also accused of improperly touching a 15-year-old girl in South Brunswick and in Hillsborough on a number of occasions between March 2014 and June 2014.

Authorities did not disclose whether either girl was a member of or was associated with the church. They said the investigation began after the 15-year-old girl contacted the South Brunswick Police Department last July.

Butler was a youth minister at the Eternal Life Christian Center in Franklin Township and served on the church’s executive board at the time the alleged incidents occurred. It wasn’t clear Wednesday night if he is still affiliated with the church, and a telephone message left for the church’s senior pastor was not immediately returned.

A telephone number for Butler could not be located Wednesday night.
