PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has honored a city employee who refereed this week’s NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship game.

Elorza gave a key to the city Thursday to Michael Stephens for his selection as an official for Monday night’s game as Duke beat Wisconsin for the national title. Stephens is Providence’s deputy director of recreation.

Stephens was joined by family and friends at the City Hall festivities.

Elorza says Stephens has been a “great ambassador” for the city’s recreation department and a community leader.

Stephens has been an NCAA basketball referee since 1997 and has officiated four Final Four games before being selected to referee this year’s title game.
