HEMET, Calif. (AP) - Officials say sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a wanted parolee who led officers on a brief chase and pointed a gun at them near Hemet.

The Press-Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/1P945tf ) Deputy Mike Vasquez said that deputies spotted the wanted man driving on Highway 74 Wednesday.

The man, whose name hasn’t been released, led officers on a pursuit and crashed into a fence a short distance away. Vasquez said the man emerged from his vehicle and pointed a gun at deputies, who then opened fire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies, Hemet police and other agencies had responded to the scene. At least one sniper and an armored vehicle were deployed to secure the area.

The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
