HONOLULU (AP) - A medical examiner says the 21-year-old Maui inmate who died Aug. 6 in a private Arizona prison was strangled.

Jonathan Namauleg was serving three years at Saguaro Correctional Center in Arizona for third-degree arson. His death has been ruled a homicide.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/1Lbm0yV ) Friday that Namauleg shared a cell with 41-year-old Jason Lee McCormick. The Department of Public Safety says McCormick activated a distress button to alert officers that his cellmate needed medical attention.

McCormick was convicted of murdering a visiting Pittsburgh professor at the victim’s Waikiki apartment in 1996. Information brought out at McCormick’s trial showed that McCormick used a sleeper hold or chokehold on the professor, causing his death.
