LANSING, Mich. (AP) - No criminal charges will be filed in the death of a 39-year-old Grand Ledge man who was found unresponsive while in custody at a Lansing police lockup.

Police said in a news release Thursday that Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings won’t file criminal charges in the April 27 death of Christopher Phillips. The release says an autopsy showed Phillips died of an overdose of multiple drugs.

Phillips was being held on a misdemeanor traffic charge. Officers discovered him not breathing and performed CPR. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Michigan State Police investigated the incident for the prosecutor.

Lansing police internal affairs unit will now investigate to determine whether detention staff violated department policies or procedures.
