ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Some western North Carolina counties are cracking down on drunken driving.

State statistics released Wednesday show that Buncombe and Mitchell counties were tied for the best driving while impaired conviction rate in western North Carolina.

The conviction rate in the two counties is 82 percent. That’s 20 percent higher than the state average.

Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams, Judge Julie Kepple and Mothers Against Drunk Driving and law enforcement officers from the Asheville area told reporters about the DWI statistics for the fiscal year that ended June 30.

Rutherford County had an 81 percent conviction rate. Henderson County was at 79 percent.

Conviction rates were less than 50 percent in Cherokee, Graham and Swain counties.
