SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Three men involved in a shootout that critically wounded a San Bernardino police officer have been sentenced to 15 years each in state prison.

Jonathan Contreras, Orlando Cruz and Gonzalo Medina were sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to assault with an assault weapon on a peace officer and an allegation of furnishing a firearm.

Police say they were in a group approached by Gabriel Garcia and his trainee officer last August. Another man, 38-year-old Alex Alvarado, opened fire, wounding Garcia before the trainee killed him.

Garcia suffered brain injuries and spent months in the hospital.

The other three men, all in their 20s, didn’t fire any shots but prosecutors argued that they knew their companion was armed and had talked about killing police.
