NEW YORK (AP) - A 32-year-old man who spent seven years awaiting trial at Rikers Island was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for a 2008 Memorial Day weekend slaying.

The New York Daily News reports (http://nydn.us/1VgjZ9c ) Cadman Williams was sentenced Thursday for the shooting death of 42-year-old Kenneth Sackey.

Prosecutors say Williams shot Sackey in the head and back after Sackey sought revenge for a fight he had with Williams’ friends the night before.

The trial was put on hold after the suspected murder weapon was found right before its start date.

Officials clashed over the use of a controversial DNA test to tie Williams to the weapon, which was resolved after Williams testified he pulled the trigger in self-defense.

A Bronx jury disagreed and convicted Williams of manslaughter earlier this summer.
