DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (AP) - Dauphin Island Sea Lab officials say a manatee that was well known to researchers and residents of the Mobile Bay area has died.

Officials said in a statement the carcass of a manatee known as Zewie washed ashore in the Mobile Bay Aug. 21. Dauphin Island Sea Lab officials say a necropsy has been conducted and the results are pending.

Officials say Zewie was at least 27 years old and had been known to travel as far as Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana during seasonal migrations. Officials say the manatee had been in Dog River and parts of the Mobile-Tansaw Delta before he was found dead.

Manatees are an endangered species. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Dianne Ingram says manatee deaths are typically associated with cold stress during the winter.
