CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Charles City School Board has expelled a student for striking an assistant wrestling coach in November.

Superintendent Dan Cox says the board considered the expulsion in a closed session Tuesday evening. The board voted unanimously to expel the student for the rest of the year. One board member wasn’t present.

The student will also be permanently banned from extracurricular activities. He will be allowed to take online classes and can petition to come back to school next year.

The board recommended the student get anger management counseling.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1NURigl ) that the student hasn’t been identified because discipline-related records are confidential under state law.

Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson has said in an email that charges will not be filed against the former student.
