DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit church has renamed its 25-year-old warming center after Pope Francis.

The Detroit News reports (http://detne.ws/1IaNYNI ) the new name for the warming center at Saints Peter & Paul Jesuit Church is set to be celebrated with events in January.

The renaming as the “Pope Francis Center” also coincides with the recent start of the worldwide Year of Mercy instituted by the pope.

The Rev. Tim McCabe, who directs the center, says: “We are delighted by Pope Francis’ consistent message of love and mercy to the most vulnerable in our society.”

The center started in 1990. Since then, the facility has served more than 145,000 people.
