LAS VEGAS (AP) - The latest in the search for an assailant after a Las Vegas police officer wounded several miles south of the Strip. All times local.

6:45 p.m.

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo says that while the suspected shooter is in custody, more arrests could come from the investigation of the wounding of a patrol officer at an apartment complex south of the Las Vegas Strip.

Lombardo tells reporters that police are trying to figure out how the suspect slipped through a police cordon around the scene of the shooting and made it to the Southern Hills residential and golf community, more than three miles away.

Police Sgt. Jeff Clark says the man who was arrested is 38 and matches the description of the shooter. His name wasn’t immediately made public.

The sheriff says it doesn’t appear the man in custody was wounded.

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo says police believe they arrested the man who opened fire and wounded a patrol officer during what the sheriff called a chance encounter in an apartment complex.

The veteran officer returned fire but may not have hit the shooter, who ran off and became the focus of an hourslong manhunt south of the Las Vegas Strip.

He was found more than four hours later, several miles away.

Lombardo says it’s not clear what prompted the shooting or how the man eluded police who blanketed a wide area around where shots were fired.

There is no information yet on the identity of the suspect.

The sheriff says the wounded officer is a married father and a 21-year police veteran. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

Police say a man is in custody after a wide search south of the Las Vegas Strip for a shooter who wounded a Las Vegas police officer responding to an unrelated domestic disturbance call.

Officer Jesse Roybal tells The Associated Press the man was arrested about 4:30 p.m., and the search is being called off.

Roybal didn’t have other details.

The shooting happened about noon at an apartment complex near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Pebble Road.

Police say an armed assailant exchanged gunfire with the officer, who was wounded in the arm and upper chest.

The officer is hospitalized, but he is expected to recover.

Police are searching for a light-skinned black man in his 30s after a Las Vegas police officer was shot Thursday while responding to an unrelated domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex.

Sgt. Jeff Clark says the description has changed from initial reports, but the man police are seeking is still said to be bald, wearing dark pants and a black hooded sweat shirt over a white shirt.

Clark says the officer was wounded in the arm and torso. He’s expected to recover.

That’s more than 3 miles south of the Strip.

Clark says the shooter wasn’t involved in the apartment disturbance, but pulled a gun and shot the officer.
