HOLMDEL, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey town has agreed to an $80,000 settlement with a woman who says she wasn’t hired as a police officer because of her gender.

The Asbury Park Press reports (http://on.app.com/1NyXKWQ ) Stephanie Geisel filed a complaint in 2013 alleging the Holmdel Police Department hired two male officers that were less qualified than her. She says she wasn’t hired even though she had more formal education, experience and scored higher on the civil service exam.

The lawsuit accused the township of violating the state’s Civil Rights Act and laws against discrimination.

Township officials didn’t return calls seeking comment.

The settlement was reached earlier this year.
