TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Rain stymied the second day of New Jersey’s extended black bear hunt.

Three bears were killed on Thursday.

Hunters have bagged 20 bruins since the hunt was extended on Wednesday, bringing the total number taken this season to 492.

Most of the kills have taken place in Sussex County.

Officials extended the season by four days after the number of bears harvested during the six-day hunt that ended Saturday fell short of goals. The extended hunt ends 30 minutes after sunset on Saturday.

The state recently expanded the areas where hunting is allowed to all or portions of Hunterdon, Passaic, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties, and parts of Bergen and Mercer counties.
