PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Need some extra cash for the holiday season? South Dakota’s treasurer wants you to check the state’s unclaimed property list, which currently has more than $344 million.

Unclaimed property refers to accounts in financial institutions, businesses and government agencies that have had no activity for three years or longer. The state holds the money in a custodial capacity until the property can be returned to the rightful owners.

State Treasurer Rich Sattgast says that as a father of three, he understands how important the holidays are for families. He says “a little extra cash can make a big difference, especially this time of year.”

The state has received $71.7 million in forgotten funds since July and returned over $7.5 million to people who claimed the money.
