HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - An annual holiday gathering for families of deployed Connecticut National Guard members is taking place in Hartford.

More than 70 children are expected to attend the party Saturday at the William A. O’Neill Armory.

Volunteers organized the party through a program dedicated to helping military families address the stresses of deployment.

Maj. Gen. Thaddeus J. Martin, commander of the Connecticut National Guard, says the program aims to help the families year-round, not only during the holidays.

The state National Guard currently has more than 240 service members deployed to places around the world.
