CANTON, N.Y. (AP) - Police in northern New York are investigating the disappearance of more than a dozen dogs.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning to dog owners after receiving multiple reports of missing dogs over the last few weeks.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse (https://bit.ly/1QRGQHq ) reports that dogs have disappeared from fenced-in yards that they couldn’t have run away from on their own. One dog was removed from its chain.

Because none of the missing dogs has been located in St. Lawrence County, authorities believe the thieves could be bringing them to another area.

St. Lawrence County Animal Control Officer James McConkey says there have been at least two attempted abductions in which individuals tried to steal dogs out of their owners’ yards. In both cases, the would-be dognappers escaped.
