PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Parkersburg has placed solar panels at the city’s recycling center to cut reduce energy costs and air pollution.

The 209-panel solar array is located on the top of the center’s main building. Media outlets report that city officials held a ribbon cutting for the project on Friday.

Pickering Energy Solutions installed the solar array at no cost to the city. Company founder Chip Pickering says the array will produce about 37 percent of the energy used by the recycling center.

Pickering says the solar array will save the city about $720 annually in electricity costs and reduce carbon dioxide releases. The savings will increase as energy prices rise.
