CORUNNA, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a barrel of acid exploded at a factory in Shiawassee County, sending two people to the hospital with injuries.

Corunna Caledonia Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian Matthies says crews responded on Wednesday to the explosion at Machine Tool and Gear in Corunna, about 65 miles northwest of Detroit.

Matthies says a reaction involving nitric acid caused a 55 gallon steel barrel to split. Injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1O5rCcV ) employees were evacuated afterward. An environmental cleanup and air quality monitoring were planned.
