DETROIT (AP) - The mother of a 4-year-old Detroit boy who was mauled to death by pit bulls says the tragedy “will never leave my eyes.”

Lucillie Strickland says she tried to protect Xavier Strickland, but the dogs grabbed him and dragged him away Wednesday. Strickland tells the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1XKVmB2 ) the pit bulls were “so vicious.”

Police killed three dogs and seized another.

Strickland and her son were walking to a school when the attack occurred. An uncle, Ramone Cage, says Xavier’s sister was bitten last month.

Strickland says the boy’s mauling “will never leave my eyes, never leave my mind.”

Police are investigating the owner of the unlicensed dogs. The Detroit Health Department says it had no prior contact.
