DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A gas main break is clogging streets in downtown Des Moines as police and firefighters block traffic while utility workers scramble to fix the problem.

KCCI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1HJoeI4 ) the break was caused by construction workers Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters began closing stretches of Grand and Locust streets between Third and Fifth avenues about 4 p.m. and the area remained shut off to traffic 90 minutes later.

A strong smell of gas was present throughout downtown.

The street closures caused rush-hour traffic to move slowly through those streets that remained open.
