BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A boy is in custody after police say he shot another boy at a Birmingham playground.

News outlets report that on Nov. 25, a 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg at a playground outside Hayes K-8 School in North Birmingham. After initial questioning, police said the shooting might have been accidental.

However, on Tuesday police said the shooting was actually intentional. Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards says a 13-year-old boy has been taken into custody and has been charged with second-degree assault.

Edwards says some “jokes or other words” were exchanged between the boys, which led to the shooting.

He says it’s unclear exactly how the 13-year-old got his hands on a gun. The boy told police he got it from a friend.
