GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - A jury has recommended a death sentence for an Etowah County man who was convicted for a second time of beating his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son to death.

Court records show that a jury voted 12-0 Friday to sentence Kevin Andrew Towles to death in the December 2006 slaying of Geontae Glass.

Prosecutors have said Glass was beaten to death. Authorities said Towles and the boy’s mother staged a carjacking and kidnapping to conceal the boy’s death.

The boy’s mother, Shalinda Glass, has been serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to murder in the case.

Towles was convicted in the boy’s death in 2009 but improper testimony led to an order for a retrial.

Court documents say a judge is expected to decide Towles’s sentence on March 9.
