OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The Washington state Department of Commerce has awarded $45.5 million in loans and grants for affordable housing projects across the state.

Those funds and $2.6 million from the federal HOME program will pay for 36 projects in 26 Washington counties.

State officials say the projects will provide more than 1,200 affordable housing units for low-income people. That includes people with chronic mental illnesses, homeless families, people with disabilities and veterans.

An additional 120 seasonal farmworker beds will be provide to help the state’s agriculture industry.

Commerce Director Brian Bonlender says the investment helps address the affordable housing crisis in Washington state that threatens to push people into homelessness.
